Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs) are hybrids that use a small gas engine only to charge the battery — the wheels are always driven by the electric motor. How an EREV Works

An EREV has an electric motor that drives the wheels and a small gas engine that runs a generator to charge the battery when it's low. The engine never connects to the wheels — it only spins the generator. This means the engine runs at its most efficient RPM regardless of vehicle speed. The BMW i3 with range extender and the Nissan e-Power are real-world examples.

The advantage: you get EV driving feel (instant torque, silent operation) without range anxiety. When the battery hits a low state of charge, the generator turns on and extends your range by 100-200 km.

The Problem with EREVs

  • You're still paying for an entire new car: $35,000-$50,000 entry price
  • You carry an engine and generator you don't use most days: Extra weight, extra maintenance
  • Limited used market: Few EREV models sold, hard to find parts
  • Battery still degrades: Same lithium chemistry as any EV, same replacement cost
