The VW Beetle's rear-engine layout, lightweight body, and simple air-cooled drivetrain make it one of the most straightforward vehicles to convert to electric. This guide covers the installation process for a CMVTE conversion kit, from donor preparation to road testing.

The ideal Beetle donor is a 1960-1979 model with a solid chassis, minimal rust at the heater channel areas, and a functional transmission. Models from these years have a 6V or 12V electrical system that is simple to interface with the CMVTE controller's 12V outputs. Inspect the front trunk floor (the forward battery location) for rust — water collects here on parked cars. If the pan is sound, the donor is ready for conversion.
Phase 1: Removal
- Disconnect the battery and drain the engine oil, transmission fluid, and fuel.
- Remove the rear engine cover, then unbolt the engine and transmission as a single unit. A Beetle engine and gearbox together weigh approximately 130 kg — a transmission jack is recommended.
- Remove the fuel tank from the front trunk, the exhaust system from beneath the vehicle, and the clutch cable.
- Clean the engine bay and transmission tunnel of grease and debris. The space is now ready for the electric motor and controller.
Phase 2: Motor Installation
CMVTE offers two approaches depending on whether you retain the original gearbox:
- With original transmission: The CVx motor bolts to the Beetle's swing-axle or IRS transmission housing via a CMVTE adapter plate. A spline coupler connects the motor shaft to the transmission input. The original clutch cable operates the motor's neutral/idle function through the CMVTE controller.
- With CMVTE gearbox: The complete motor-gearbox unit replaces the original drivetrain. New CV half-shafts connect to the Beetle's rear hubs. This option delivers smoother shifting and a higher torque rating for performance builds.
Both approaches use the four original engine mounting points. The motor mounts are CNC-machined aluminium and bolt directly to the Beetle frame horns — no welding required.
Phase 3: Battery Placement
The Beetle offers two main battery locations, and combining both gives the best result:
- Front trunk: 10-15 kWh LFP pack. The original fuel tank and spare tyre well provide a pre-formed cavity. CMVTE supplies a steel battery tray that bolts to the existing fuel tank mounting holes. Weight over the front axle improves the Beetle's rear-heavy balance.
- Rear engine bay (under the rear seat area): 10-20 kWh LFP pack. The space formerly occupied by the engine and fuel tank area accepts a flat pack. This location keeps the HV cables short to the motor and controller.
A combined 25-35 kWh configuration provides 120-180 km range. All CMVTE packs use prismatic LFP cells with active BMS and IP67 enclosures.
Phase 4: Controller, Wiring & Ancillaries
- Mount the CMVTE controller in the rear engine bay or beneath the rear seat, away from direct water spray. The controller includes the motor driver, DC-DC converter, and BMS interface in a single unit.
- Route the HV cables from the battery packs to the controller through the factory wiring channels beneath the Beetle's floorpan. Use the supplied conduit to protect against abrasion.
- Install the CMVTE accelerator pedal (a direct replacement for the Beetle's cable-actuated pedal), the charging port in the front trunk or rear quarter panel, and the 12V aux battery in the front trunk.
- Connect the CMVTE controller to the Beetle's 12V wiring. The controller outputs signals compatible with the original speedometer and warning lights.
Phase 5: Testing & Tuning
Before the first drive, perform an insulation resistance test between the HV system and chassis (target: >1 MΩ). Power the system on and check the controller display for fault codes. Test throttle response, regen braking force, and the charging circuit at low speed. CMVTE's controller software allows adjustment of regen strength (10-70%), throttle curve, and maximum current limit.
