Choosing the Right Voltage

  • 48V: Best for low-speed, budget-friendly builds. Keeps battery costs low and is safe for DIY builders with less experience.

A 10 kW PMSM motor (72V or 96V) is ideal for lightweight vehicles up to 1,000 kg — golf carts, compact UTVs, small car conversions like a Suzuki Swift or Fiat 500. It delivers enough torque for moderate hills and a top speed of 60-80 km/h depending on gearing.

A 15 kW PMSM motor (96V or 120V) handles vehicles up to 1,800 kg — cargo vans, pickup trucks, and larger passenger cars. The extra power provides faster acceleration, better hill-climbing, and sustained highway speeds.

Things to Check Before Buying

  • Voltage match: Your battery pack voltage must match the motor's rated voltage. A 72V motor on a 96V pack will overheat. Running at lower voltage than rated reduces torque and may cause controller under-voltage shutdown.
  • Cooling: Air-cooled is fine for intermittent use — short trips, low duty cycles. Water-cooled is necessary for continuous full-load operation, such as delivery vans or vehicles used on steep terrain.
  • Controller compatibility: The controller must support the motor's peak current and have the right communication protocol (CAN, Hall, or encoder). CMVTE controllers are pre-configured for matching PMSM motors.
