Converting a classic car to electric in the UK is an exciting project, but you need to follow DVLA rules to keep it legal on the road. Here's a clear breakdown of the approval process, from notifying the DVLA to passing the IVA test.

Understanding DVLA's Role

The DVLA treats an electric conversion as a significant change to the vehicle's identity. You must update the V5C logbook to reflect the new propulsion type, or the vehicle cannot be legally driven. This means submitting evidence of the conversion and proving compliance with UK safety standards.

  • Notify the DVLA that the propulsion system has changed from combustion to electric. This can be done by completing the relevant section of the V5C and sending it to DVLA Swansea. Failure to notify can result in fines or the vehicle being classified as illegally modified.
  • Submit a new V5C application with detailed technical specs of the motor, battery, and controller. Include photographs of the installation, receipts for major components, and a wiring diagram showing high-voltage and low-voltage circuits.
  • Pass SVA or IVA testing depending on the vehicle's age. These tests are carried out at authorised VCA test centres across the UK. Book early — wait times can be several weeks.
  • Meet safety standards for lighting, brakes, and structural integrity. The vehicle must also display a UK-registered number plate and have a valid speedometer readable in mph.

SVA vs IVA: Which One Applies?

Notify your insurer before driving the converted vehicle, or your policy may be void. Some UK insurers specialise in modified and electric classic cars. For MOT, EVs over three years old still require an annual test. Emissions checks are skipped, but brakes, suspension, lighting, and the high-voltage system are inspected.

Battery and Electrical Safety

  • Chassis: Any structural modifications may require re-inspection. Cutting or welding the chassis to fit the motor or battery mount should be documented with photos for the IVA examiner.
  • Weight distribution: Replacing a heavy iron engine with a lighter motor and adding batteries changes the vehicle's weight balance. Ensure the axle loads stay within the vehicle's original design limits or obtain an engineer's report.
